Barril beach (praia do Barril) is one of the best beaches in the country! It is located in the central zone of Tavira Island.
BARRIL BEACH (PRAIA DO BARRIL), TAVIRA
A vast and magnificent sand to lose sight of. The sea is very crystal clear and the water temperature is almost always higher than in all other Portuguese beaches (including in the western Algarve – between Portimão and Sagres). The beach has no rocks which allows for even more relaxed and relaxing sea baths).
It is part of the Ria Formosa Natural Park. It has a considerable number of beach supports (restaurants and cafés a little expensive…). It also has some shops where you can buy some tourist items.
There was a fishing community here in the past. The old fishing houses that existed there were later transformed into shops, restaurants, and cafés.
In case you forget your parasol or beach chair, know that you can rent them on this beach. If you have a particular interest in fishing communities and villages, then be sure to visit our articles about COSTA DA CAPARICA
WHERE’S THE BARRIL BEACH?
It’s 7.8 kilometers from Tavira and only 9 minutes by car. It’s a sand tongue between the Ria Formosa and the Atlantic Ocean. The sand is approximately 1500 meters from the road.
HOW TO GET TO THE BARRIL BEACH – PRAIA DO BARRIL?
To visit this beach, you have to cross one of the floating bridges over the beautiful ria. There are two bridges you can use: the new pedestrian bridge and the old pedestrian bridge.
The old train (a mini-train) will take you from Pedras D’El Rei to the new floating bridge that gives you passage to the continent. If you choose to walk, after the floating bridge you will have to walk approximately 1 kilometre.
You can also cross the river by boat from Tavira island.
BARRIL BEACH – PRAIA DO BARRIL (train)
Establishing the connection between the beach and the continent, there is an old train that in the past was used to serve fishing activities. This means of transport was mainly used to transport fish caught from the beach to the continent. The train departs from Pedras D’el Rei.
Today, the train is another tourist attraction in the area.
The journey is only 1 kilometre and the price of the ticket (round trip) is 2 euros.
BOAT CROSSING TO PRAIA DO BARRIL – PRICE
There are two routes you can take with the Ferry Boat. The first option has a departure in the center of Tavira city. The second option starts at the 4 waters quay (2 kilometers from the center of Tavira). The two departures end on the same quay of the island of Tavira. After leaving the ferry, you have to walk about 400 meters to the beach.
The ferry departing from the center of the city has fixed and regular times. The second option (the second pier) only works when you have a sufficient number of clients (i.e. the crossing is dependent on demand).
Between June and September, departures take place every 30 minutes. During the off-season, the times vary and depend on demand. The ticket (round trip) costs 1,90 euros – adult price. Children pay £0.90 (round trip). The Ria Formosa Natural Park crossing takes 20 minutes.
The old fishing anchors of the former fishing community are now found on the sandbanks of the beach. In the past, they were used to keep the nets well-positioned when catching tuna. The site now serves as a memorial known as the Anchors Cemetery (there are more than 100 rusty anchors stored here).
THE TUNA FISHING HOUSES
This place was a cluster of houses in the past. There were 80 families living in this village between the months of April and September each year. Tuna fishing dominated the economy of this village until 1960. With the end of the tuna stock (over the 1960s), the villagers abandoned the site.
The houses were later restored and some houses gave rise to cafés, restaurants and huts.
BIRD WATCHING ON PEDRAS D’EL REI
The atmosphere at Pedras D’el Rei is very peaceful even in high season. The houses of the village are in the middle of green spaces and, because it is a protected area, it is possible to observe many birds, which contributes to the relaxation and relaxation of those who visit the place.
BARRIL BEACH RESTAURANTS
The gastronomic recommendations we make on this site are often the result of personal experiences we have had in these same restaurants.
On other occasions, we do careful online research and analyze the comments of users. From this careful analysis, our suggestions for the best restaurants in the area emerge. This time we have to say that none of the restaurants located on the beach at the barrel meet the minimum requirements to suggest them (none of the restaurants has a minimum 4 star rating).
Therefore, we will recommend restaurants near the beach.
A TASQUINHA DO BRUNO
A Google rating of 4.6 (out of 5) and over 130 customer comments. It is the highest rated restaurant in the area. The comments insistently refer to the friendliness of the staff (a small family), the welcoming atmosphere and the quality of the tapas. It seems to be the perfect place for some tapas and wine at the end of the day. The space is small and the quality-price ratio seems to be fair.
The restaurant “O Capelo” is a seafood restaurant with over 520 comments and an overall rating of 4.3 stars (out of 5). The most positive comments often refer to the good fish, the good seafood, the beautiful view of the Ria Formosa and a good relationship between quality and price. Tuna steak (of course) seems to be a speciality of the house.
NARROW BEACH – PRAIA DA TERRA ESTREITA
The beach of the narrow land is an even narrower portion of this sand tongue. It is very close to Barril beach (as you can see on the map below), in a narrowing of the sand. Here too you will find restaurants and cafés supporting the bathing area.
BARRIL BEACH NATURISM
The beach has a naturism area. It is a reserved area that is 1500 meters from the train station.
If you are at Praia do Barril, the naturist area is 1000 meters (to the west) from the last beach awning concession (the area has no surveillance).
