Camilo Beach (Praia do Camilo), Praia da Luz and Praia Dona Ana are three of the most beautiful Portuguese beaches! White sands, crystal clear waters, and dizzying cliffs are the ingredients for the stunning beauty you will find in Lagos!
Lagos is a city that belongs to the district of Faro (Algarve region). It is located in the western part of the Algarve (the so-called Barlavento Algarvio). As you know, the Algarve is divided into the Eastern and Western Algarve. The East Algarve offers beaches with dunes and little wind. The windward side is famous for its brownish cliffs and a north wind (perfect for water sports lovers who depend on the wind).
It has a population of 31,000 and a historic centre that can only be known on foot. Lagos’ past was strongly linked to the Portuguese discoveries and is today a tourist reference that is due, among other factors, to beaches such as Praia do Camilo, Praia dona Ana and Praia da Luz.
If you visit Lagos you will find a quiet town with a cheerful atmosphere. There is an almost constant breeze that embraces the city and takes with it a smell of the sea. The beaches of Lagos are famous for their beauty. A beauty that you will not find anywhere else. A perfect combination of cliffs, blue-green sea, and enigmatic caves embedded in a rocky coast. The beaches of Luz, Camilo, and Dona Ana are only three among the many beaches that you will find in this Algarve region.
Protected and supported by large cliffs, the beach has a small white sand and clear turquoise water. Before going down the stairs (200 steps), enjoy the magnificent view! You will be looking at one of the most breathtaking beaches on the European continent. A beach that is a symbol of the Algarve and a symbol of Portuguese tourism.
The beach is guarded (during the bathing season), has a parking lot nearby and a huge staircase with access to the beach. There will be sun loungers for rent, an area for showers and toilets.
HOW TO GET TO CAMILO BEACH?
If you’re at Marina de Lagos, take the EM534 until you find Avenida da República. Then follow the N125 until you find rua professor Luís Albuquerque, the street that will take you to the beach.
PRAIA DA LUZ
7 kilometers from Lagos, Praia da Luz is also known and called Praia da Vila da Luz, as the beach is located in the village of Luz. There you will find a small fisherman’s village that has become in the last decades a great tourist attraction. If you have a particular interest in old fishermen’s quarters, be sure to read our articles about Costa da Caparica.
The once small town of Luz is now a place with a wide range of services such as restaurants, bars, hotels and small shops.
Praia da Luz is located in front of the village of Luz and is another example of a beautiful beach in the region. It is small and perfect for those who want to relax and enjoy the sun. It is famous for the small pools of water that form on the rocks. These small natural pools are particularly inviting for children to play safely. If you are one of those vacationers who likes to watch the molluscs and the little crabs that live in the rocks, then this is “your beach”! But if you are one of those people who likes to maneuver “a kite” then don’t leave it at home because on the beach of light the wind is a regular presence.
HOW TO GET TO THE PRAIA DA LUZ?
It’s about 15 minutes from Marina de Lagos. Take the national road 125 and you will easily reach Praia da luz.
The beach has a parking area and access to the sand is via walkways. There is a lifeguard during the bathing season, showers and toilets.
DONA ANA BEACH
The most beautiful among the beautiful beaches of Lagos! It is also small and cozy with enigmatic cliffs. The sea, the sand and the rock formations form an idyllic scenery.
The beach was named after a nun who once lived in the city convent. During World War II, the convent of nuns was invaded and all the nuns were murdered. All but one: the nun Ana ran away through a tunnel that connected the beach.
Over the years, the beach has won several international awards and has figured in international tourist itineraries. Tripadvisor considered it the best beach in the world in 2015!
HOW TO GET TO THE BEACH OF LIGHT?
Praia Dona Ana is near Camilo beach. It is approximately 10 minutes away (by car or motorbike) from Lagos marina. Although the distance is short, road directions to get there can be confusing. Turn on the GPS, it will be the easiest solution not to get in the wrong way.
Praia Dona Ana has parking and a huge staircase to access the sand. The beach is also watched during the summer. As beach support there are public showers and toilets. The beach has sun loungers for rent.
The beaches of Camilo and Dona Ana are perfect for resting, reading a book, and listening to music or the sounds of the sea. Because they are beaches with small sands they are not ideal for those who like to play football or other sports activities.

WHAT TO DO NEAR THE BEACHES OF CAMILO, LUZ AND DONA ANA?
PONTA DA PIEDADE
Ponta de Piedade is a rocky structure and perhaps the biggest tourist attraction in Lagos. It is a natural monument formed by cliffs 20 meters high. You can visit these mysterious caves in two ways: you can access it by sea or by land.
If you choose to access by land then you should do so from the Ponta da Piedade Lighthouse. There you will find a path of stairs carved out of the rock formations.
If you prefer to do it by sea, you should go to the marina of Lagos. There are several excursions in fishing boats and sailing boats that will take you there.
FORTE DA PONTA DA BANDEIRA
This monument is very close to Camilo Beach and Dona Ana beach (5 minutes by car) and is in excellent condition (it was restored in 1960).
It is also called Forte do Pau da Bandeira. It was built in the late seventeenth century and played an important role as a defensive structure of the city of Lagos against the Spanish (War of Restoration that opposed Portugal to Spain).
When entering the fort of Ponta da Bandeira, pay attention to the drawbridge that rises over a moat. Inside the fort, you will find a chapel dedicated to Santa Bárbara lined with tiles dating from the 18th century.
Space is now a place of culture (art exhibitions, live music, and a restaurant that evokes the past of Lagos). It is here that the most traditional festival of Lagos takes place every year: Bath 29. On 29th August, the people of Lagos take their midnight bath, formerly considered a purifier. The view of the city is also an element of attraction of the Ponta da Bandeira fort.
